Car Buying Sites Compared: Best Quotes, Feedback and Networks

Car Buying Sites Compared

Here you’ll find our central comparison showcasing the UK’s leading car buying sites. This booming sector was championed by WeBuyAnyCar.com who have been the dominant force since they launched in 2006. They have now served more than 1 million customers. The market share has however become more balanced a decade on. The key competitors that have focussed on retail have been TrustedCarBuyers.com and WeWantAnyCar.com. Major dealership chains have also been flexing their muscle in the space such as Arnold Clark and Evans Halshaw. In this comparison the results of our mystery shopping tests have been added. As well as analysing value (quotes adjusted by admin and transfer fees), we’ll explore customer feedback and total network sizes.

How Does the Car Selling Process Work Online?

A seller would reach the buyer’s site to complete a form. They’ll initially ask for the reg plate, the mileage, the car’s past owners, service history plus contact details. In most cases, an instant quote will be displayed on screen. They’ll seek to book an appointment to complete the inspection and sale. This’ll be done at a local branch although some companies make home visits. The quotes are supposed to be near accurate estimates, but it is common to see knockdowns when the inspection is conducted. A quoted price would typically be guaranteed for 7 days. There is often a retrieval facility to pull up any recent quotes. We’ll note the required documentation below.

Notes:
The sorting above is based on current Alexa.com rankings (UK & global). The higher a company is ranked, the more visitors they are simply receiving. UK differs from global in only counting local IP visits. When it comes to fees, we have only listed an admin or payment fee if one is charged. When this comes free, we have left blank. By default you’ll be handed with a free payment that takes 4 or so days that is why it is important to factor in same day transfers, as we have done below. Labels: (M-50) = Minimum value (in this instance of £50) and NR = No Ranking on Alexa (more common with UK rank). In select cases, some info surrounding fees and minimum valuations is unclear. We’ll be sending queries soon to seek confirmation.

Best Quotes

Comparison Test #1 (March 2016)

We started things off selling a Ford Focus that was being sold by a leading dealer. This gave us the reg plate, the value (£10,018) and mileage (20,000). For the quotations below, we set the vehicle as having 1 past owner, a full service history and full MOT (if asked for). Obtaining a quotation is always free and you aren’t at obligation to proceed. We’ll follow with how much was quoted + the overall price when discounting the admin fee and same day funding fee (if applicable).

Notes:
Some companies above are scored on their mid-prices. This is due to top offers being required at showroom status and so the standard would need to be immaculate.

Comparison Test #2 (December 2016)

In December 2016 we again put each company to the test. As before, we wanted to use a vehicle with a similar value. The past amount was £10,018 with mileage of 20,000. This time we used a listing from a dealer where the price was going for £9999. The mileage was however higher at 43,000. This particular motor was an Audi A3 Sportback 1.6 TDI.

1) TrustedCarBuyers: £8105 + £8055.01
2) WeBuyAnyCar: £8000 + £7895.26
3) Money4YourMotors: £7513 + £7444.01
4) CarShop: £7500 + £7425
5) EvansHalshaw: £7386 + £7371
6) ArnoldClark: £7301 + £7301

Other

Car4Cash: Quote error.
SellYourCarScotland: Had closed since past testing.
TheCarBuyingService: As above.

Notes:
Trusted Car Buyers also offered £8204 when not in a rush (they sell on your behalf). This was ignored though as we are seeking fast turnarounds. The Evans Halshaw and Sytner quotes were sent via email rather than instantly being shown on screen. As before, it was common to see ranges specified. We again took the average quotations and adjusted for speedy payouts. We Want Any Car did in the past provide single valuations, but this time there was 5. During this month they had a free fast transfer promotion (this has since been removed). Both Evans Halshaw and Motorhog had changed their systems to offer instant pricing that wasn’t the case on the first test.

Feedback

Customer feedback data was pulled from Feefo, Review Centre and Trustpilot in December 2016. If a company isn’t added it is because they either didn’t have a listing or they had little feedback. We used a cut-off point of 50, although most firms only had several. When skimming through feedback it was common to see complaints raised regarding unknown admin/payment fees. This is understandable since no one discloses this info when quoting (often only in their terms and conditions). Some concerns also surrounded the variation between web and inspection prices. We have marked the score plus feedback count (rounded off) in brackets. They provide either a score out of 5 or 10. From this we have calculated the overall percentage rating.

Feefo

1) BestCarBuyer: 96% (670)
2) TheCarBuyingGroup: 96% (190)
3) TrustedCarBuyers: 94% (430)

5) WeWantAnyCar: 88% (3710)

Networks

Only the major sector brands have a large network of branches. It makes sense that a firm would be more attractive if you only needed to travel a few miles to get to the appointment. Obviously, you don’t want to make a long trip only to be welcomed with a nasty amended price upon inspection. Those unable to fund networks instead opt to come to you that itself isn’t a bad thing, although the thought of waiting around may unsettle some sellers. In most cases, you’ll find that appointments can be booked 7 days a week. The actual opening days and hours are however often rotated across locations and so we’ll leave out listing specific times.

1) WeBuyAnyCar.com (206) | Open: Mon/Sun (some have rotated days off)
2) TrustedCarBuyers.com (90) | Open: Mon/Sun (Sunday usually by appointment only)
3) WeWantAnyCar.com (69) | Open: Mon/Sun
4) TheCarBuyingGroup.co.uk (58) | Open: Not disclosed
5) Car-Ching.co.uk (18) | Open: Mon/Sun

Dealerships

1) Arnold Clark: 200 (95)
2) Sytner: 140 (30)
3) Evans Halshaw: 130 (30)

Notes:
The 206, 69, 58 and 18 tallies are exact counts. The rest are estimates. In regards to the dealers, the actual buying service is strictly available at select locations. As we’re aware, Arnold Clark covers 95, Evans Halshaw has around 30 and Sytner references 30 specialist buyers.

= Trusted Car Buyers currently offers the best value. The market leader also performed well.

Feedback

Highest Rating: IWanttoSellMyCar: 98% (RC)
Most Feedback: WeBuyAnyCar: 10,980 (FF)
Notable Range: WeBuyAnyCar: 90% (FF), 80% (RC), 90% (TP)
Notable Scores: TheCarBuyingGroup: 96% (FF) and 92% (RC)

= It’s tricky to draw conclusions since no company has overly strong support across all 3 portals. Feefo is the best measure of authenticity since their feedback is matched to the transactions. Review Centre and Trustpilot are less effective with people usually heading on those sites to have a bit of a rant. Customers are rarely directed on those sides and so when there is feedback, this doesn’t tend to come in high volume. When it does, this often triggers questioning on authenticity if the firm is relatively unknown.

Networks

= We Buy Any Car remains the dominant retail operation, found in 206 locations.

TrustedCarBuyers.com has an impressive range of 90 that exist within existing dealerships (they plan to expand to 300). We Want Any Car (69) and The Car Buying Group (58) are also noteworthy, but other than this there aren’t many big retail operations. With motor dealers, Arnold Clark buys in 95 of their approx 200 chain, but the others were no higher than 30.
